Canyon turned 26. (!) We celebrated with Prussos, Hodsons, and Hatches, Smashburgers and cheesecake.

And we are being overtaken by 'boobies' - actually birdies and more specifically Robins. Is this happening to anyone else? I don't ever remember this from before. They are really loud and everywhere in our complex.

It feels weird to post without a picture of Bo, but he is here, alive and well. And January is almost over. Its been a pretty happy January, but there is still a sense of accomplishment when it is wholly past.

So the news is no surgery. Good news. But he has been given instruction for pretty much no use of his left hand for at least a few weeks. And Canyon and I both misinterpreted the x-ray, and the fracture is in a bone in his hand, not on his finger. One more week of school.

For T.G. we went South for the lovely weather. We had our Thanksgiving lunch in Pine Valley-no pictures, and it was delicious.

Bo and Canyon enjoyed playing with Grandpa's toys.

Back up north we put on a few more layers to go out.

I am going to skip the TG update for now and head straight for the Urgent Care updates.

We have had two trips to the UC this week (it is Tues).

Yesterday we went out to lunch with Canyon and Bo fell and hit his face on a chair and his bottom teeth went all the way through his bottom lip. There was a lot of blood and we had just gotten our food. So we calmly (Bo was screaming but Canyon and I were calm) got some to-go containers and left with Bo who was calm by the time we got to the car up until we got into the Dr.'s office. And then he lost it for the next couple of hours and I was choking back tears. But he seems to be on the mend, just in time for Canyon's turn.

Canyon took his turn this morning with a spiral fracture on his finger while doing some motorcycle maintenance. Pretty minor as far as motorcycle accidents go, but we have some serious rethinking to do for the next few weeks. I will be doing a lot of typing for him, and driving him around, and we don't know if there is anything he will really be able to do at work. Mon. he will meet with a hand specialist and find out if he needs surgery.

I am grateful they are as minor as they are, but I am sorely out of shape in the emergency situations. So draining. I think this is why 'they' say to not schedule more than 50% of your time.

(I know it got spread at some point that Canyon's Bel's Palsey post was a joke- it wasn't, and this isn't either)

Bo is a real Halloweener. He was a pumpkin Sat. for the Primary parade, and Mon for Halloween, and the days in between and a couple of days after. He loved wearing his costume-with the hood on even, and the mittens. We would take the costume off to eat and to nap, but he would keep bringing it back to me to put on again.

Thanks to the Gardners for the pumpkin loan. We will have to sneak it back soon.

Halloween night we went to one of Canyon's coworkers for homemade root beer. Then to Prusso's so we could go get the homemade donuts in their neighborhood (and to see them).

Nice Halloween weather this year.

Falling Part 2

We aren't the biggest Halloween Freaks around. But every year it is a challenge to try and fit in all of our favorite "scary" movies. I know in most cases I don't share the same taste as the general public in movies, but if you haven't seen any of these I seriously recommend them. The first two are really funny.

We went up Provo Canyon with Vinny for pictures. Vinny only wanted to swim in the river and Bo only wanted to push his stroller. This was our only 'successful' picture.

We snuck over to the DL for a taste of Halloween in the 103 degree weather with Grandma Shauna. (and all of AZ apparently)

Fall part 1

This was supposed to be a giant comprehensive Fall post so I wouldn't have to do another until Christmas. But Blogger is not cooperating. So here is Pine Valley, and it is worthy of its own post. I believe Pine Valley is becoming Canyon's refuge.

We took Bo to meet Sliver and Liz the horses with Grandpa Atkin.

A nice walk down the Valley with Grandma and Grandpa Atkin. And as always we ate well, played card games, watched Jeopardy and I think we substituted General Conference this time for the usual Westerns.

We just got back from Canyon's mom's lovely wedding in Ca.

Canyon was lucky enough to get to take Mark's (the groom) Harley out for a long spin.

We have been in Utah for 3 weeks now, so I guess I should pictorally bid farewell to our nice little winter in Ca.

At the risk of offending someone I have to say the saddest thing about moving was leaving Little Canyon and Lily. They were Bo's best friends (and mine and Canyon's for that matter). I have never seen Bo so excited as when he sees one of their freckly little faces.

Bo's first DeHaro Disneyland. He and Jane were figuring out where to go next.

Moving

I keep forgetting to notify people that we are moving. I know this might not be the most polite way to notify many of you who should've already known, but it is definitely the easiest, fastest and encompasses the biggest mass. It was a last minute decision. (I am sorry Hay that you found out after the fact due to some displaced living room chairs)

So, we are moving back to Livermore after Christmas (but leaving Provo on Tues. for the holidays and going straight from there). We are very excited to skip the winter, and go to some of our favorite people and places. But we are also very sad to leave our other favorite people.

The amount of time there depends on many factors and will range between 6 mo. and forever.

We spent the whole week of TG in Livermore- with a wonderful day trip to Petaluma and San Anselmo- and were so glad to be there, especially while the storms raged in UT.

Bo met so many new friends and family members and was grossly over-stimulated and doted on by his 14 Prusso cousins -which he loved.

I can't get enough of the trees outside our windows right now. They will be gone very soon.

This is off of our back porch. Beautiful, except for the orange cones and dumpster.

Bo was 3 months on Sat. I wish I had thought to put him next to a growth gauge from the beginning. I didn't even tell him to make the shape of a guitar, he did it on his own.

Our living room will look so drab without the beautiful leaves peaking through.

Cut my hair again. So my visions meet reality again. I can't really say I hate my hair, I like the color and I can't excuse myself with wild unmanageable hair. I even have a fantastic stylist when I make it to St.G. I guess I hate my inability to manipulate (my hair, that is ). And I think the even bigger problem than my lack of skill, is that what I really want is hair that dries fabulous on its own with no work from me. And I am constantly surprised this doesn't happen. Luckily I always have this naive hope that some day soon I will have great hair and great clothes, and this keeps me pretty content with how I am now.

Maybe I will post some more inspired thoughts from General Conference later.

Wondering what this baby is going to look like. If he ever comes.

This is me on the left, not the far left. My mom just told me recently that I actually had a shorter tendon on one side of my neck so my head was always tilted like that, for a time. So this may be a possibility for BB?

I was 8 lbs something, and Canyon was 10lbs something. So he will probably be big, if he ever comes.

News-not THE news

Cyn got into culinary school and will start the end of August. It was inevitable, and I am excited for him and excited to reap the benefits.

Meanwhile we have been eating a lot of these ^ Key Lime Pie tarts Cyn made.

No baby yet. The Dr. said on Wed. to plan on him being over the due date (Sun the 8th). He is probably enjoying all of the tarts I have been feeding him and doesn't want to come out. We will see if there is any progress tomorrow.

I feel physically well, but am impatient and don't think I have enough Gilmore Girls to tide me over.

We successfully pulled off Canyon's surprise graduation party up Provo Canyon. (We= me and help from lots of people). The weather stayed clear and it was a nice night for celebrating his graduation from BYU in linguistics, since the baby will most likely be stealing his thunder on the real graduation day.

I am so glad all of the lying and sneaking can stop.

Canyon went to Germany for about a week to present at a

linguistics conference with his research group.

I have to admit I ended up a little more jealous

about this trip than I expected. But I am glad

Canyon got to experience it. And we are happy to be

reunited.

Moving Forward

Yesterday was the last day of school and tomorrow is my last day of work. Oh I am going to miss those kidlings and I am nervous about being in charge of all of the time in my day.

Here I go making goals happen for the next two months before I am 'Mom' FOREVER. I will post current progress- which is basically just my belly and a bag I finished, but they are both big- as soon as Cyn is back from Deutschland with my camera.

I will transition into my 'last summer' with a weekend in San Diego for a weddin'. (I think summer will come, it hasn't snowed since Monday)

Cyn has been gone the past few days so to distract myself from my emptiness I have been doing things Cyn would not miss- walking, mall, dollar theater, blogging, and getting up at 3:30 am to pee and eat cereal. This is by far our longest stretch apart and I don't really care to do it again.

I have to give a lesson in primary today and all I can think about is local food, so I am hoping if I make a quick post I will be able to concentrate for a short while on something else.

Yesterday Canyon and I went and saw FOOD, INC. Afterwards we attended a panel discussion with some local growers and businessmen. The movie was eye-opening, and it was good to see how the 'movement' is making its way into Utah County.

I will let you watch and form your own opinions. But I thought I would share some resources they gave us. Now Canyon and I live so far from our local food mentor we have to figure out how to get some of that good food. If the movie doesn't scare you into eating better, then the taste of the food should encourage you.

Here are a few resources for those of you in our neighborhood:

Pizzeria 712: Orem. Outstanding pizza with quality local ingredients.

Communal: Provo. Best restaurant in Provo. Focus on local ingredients (run by the same people as the Pizzeria).

Bell Organic: Draper. Completely organic and natural vegetable farm. CSA available.

Christiansen's Hog Heaven: Vernon (Tooele County). Family owned, completely natural, pasture-raised and grass-fed pork, beef, chicken, and turkey. Very nice people. CSA available.

Clifford Farms: Provo. Eggs, raspberries, honey, and produce. All-natural.

Jacob's Cove. Orem. Family-owned and operated. About a bijillion heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables. CSA available.

Breathing in California

Cyn and I did a quick trip back to CA in between his winter semester and spring term. It was REALLY really great. I was trying to describe the feeling to Canyon when we were there, but it is hard. It is like the sky is higher, or bigger... I don't know. I feel like I can breathe deeper or something.

Weekend in San Anselmo/SF with Scott, Katrina and Lily:

It was a great weekend, really. But I just can't shake the notion in my mind that Easter and spring are supposed to be warm with green grass, and sunny skies and flowers.

Cyn and I didn't get a real spring break so we made one up with a weekend in St.George

Our friends drove up from Vegas to have a delicious BBQ prepared by Cyn.

We did our usual hike/walk out in the red. The weather was PERFECT, and so we burned.

Sunday afternoon we did a beautiful walk around historic St. George, starting at my grandparents old home (pictured below) through the old Woodward and library area(where I went to 6th grade, pictured above) and to the temple and back. They have done a great job restoring a lot of it.

Dad also took me on a motorcycle ride around the old neighborhood. What a nostalgic and beautiful weekend. Luckily I had my sunburn to take back with me to snowy Provo.

I am 25 today. It is not old. I got the best present, a warm sunny day. On my break I basked in the sun and it warmed me all of the way through. Then Cyn and I did some unexpected celebrating at Bombay House.

The sunshine filled me with hopes for spring and summer and camping and being outside and longer days. But we aren't there yet, more storms are on the way.

I think maybe it is time to share our news. I am sorry if you are one of the many who deserved a personal announcement, but:
Canyon and I decided to grow a baby and have it Aug. 8th of this year. As you can see people are getting pretty excited about it.

I hope Papa Scott still has all his street dolls for when baby comes.

This is my gender-neutral baby quilt, that upon finishing sparked my feeling of readiness to give it a go.

This is Canyon the morning I told him what the test told me. It is rare that I am ever up before him.

I am just about 15 weeks along now and have nothing really to show for it (physically). But we have some great ultrasounds. I wish we have recorded it because he/she was opening and closing her/his mouth the whole time.

Before Baby Goals
Baby has intensified my feeling of needing to be prepared, of course for all things directly related to it- being healthy and excercising blah blah blah... and all of my baby sewing projects I would like to start and finish- but my real before baby goals are:

1. Have our 1 year food/water storage.
- I really really want to do homemade jam this summer
2. Update our 72-hour kits
3. Car emergency kit (including always having at least a 1/2 tank of gas)
4. Get all of our pictures and slides printed into books (and get back up cds of all pictures and computer files)
5. Make sure Canyon and I are clued in to all financial accounts, matters, passwords etc. of import.
6. Make and print geneology picture books.
7. Write in my journal at least weekly
8. And if possible work on that financial reserve

And then there is all of that about being spiritually and emotionally prepared which I need to work on but won't go into to.

I don't think the goals should be too lofty, especially because Preschool ends the end of May so I will have a good 2 months of being huge and hot in the middle of the summer, and hopefully getting some things done.

Who uses the phrase 'molly mormon' anymore anyway?

The title 'Molly Mormon' sure has been thrown around a lot lately at work. I'd actually forgotten about it. I kind of miss just being a mormon in CA. For all I know they may have hated that about me, but they were sure always nice and respectful about it.

" I met Hannah's husband the other day. I was really surprised, I totally expected him to be a Molly Mormon. (now to me) "How did you two end up together, anyway?"
(Because he is obviously so Bad A- cause he has a shaved head and is hairy? and I am a molly Mormon)

So I told her how we met, I didn't really know how else to answer the question. And then resisted and detested the urge I had to tell her of my faults and 'wild past', and simply said that we are both, in fact Mormon. (And Canyon is just as deserving of the title as I.)

I was not offended, in fact it is pretty funny to hear grown people using this term, but I am quite certain that she didn't mean to admire or compliment me. I don't even know exactly what it means. Its just weird and unnecessary.

Don't use it, especially for boys. And if you really feel like telling someone you perceive them to be really boring or strict or try too hard, or are self-righteous or whatever it is, I guess just tell them, but know it's weird.

And finally, and currently, ABC family has decided for this fall to follow Gilmore Girls (which is currently heading into the Jess phase) with an hour of Fresh Prince. Genius.

My free airline tickets were expiring so I thought up a quick trip and, thanks to Anna and Tim, made it happen. I met Anna in Chicago at our donated hotel room, then met up with a mutual friend from old EFY and BYU days for some gross corned beef and delicious lamb gyros. Then Anna and I went to the broadway musical Mary Poppins. It was really good.

Then, even though it was Anna's birthday she let me go indulge myself at the American Girl Palace before we ran at least a mile in the rain to catch our train to Wisconsin.

Tim made homemade chocolate ice cream for the birthday party. And after a branch picnic went to Holy Hill to this beautiful Basilica.

Old STG friend Jessica with her adorable babe. I ate so well and had a great time. Thanks to my gracious hosts.

And Canyon had a great band getaway while I was gone, so don't feel too bad for him.

Good ol' fashioned small town 4th of July

We Celebrated our 4th family-reunion-style in beautiful Pine Valley, and nostalgic Enterprise. Can, Gordon and I slept out on the deck every night and it was the best sleep we have had in awhile, I didn't even cough. It was a wonderful weekend.

First up, I singed my hair. I was trying to help Canyon make his beautiful pies, when I saw a flame dance across the outside bottom of the oven...so naturally I thought I would check it out. I opened the oven door and unleashed a giant fireball that literally engulfed my entire head. I can't believe I came out of it with only some singed hair and eyebrows. After realizing I wasn't on fire I felt to make sure I had eye lashes, and I do. Thanks to Brita for helping me pull out the fried hair, to Gordon for sweeping it up off the floor, and Kensey for doing what she could with the scissors.

On the fourth we went to a program in Enterprise, then Marv's for burgers, then out to the desert to Grandma's childhood home, which has since been burned. Some sad stories, but very interesting. And Canyon and others enjoyed this dangerous swing made by Grandma's dad.

Foot races at the church. Canyon not in last place. And Can and I won the wheelbarrow race.

Besides delicious food, good visiting, and guitar/cowboy stories around the campfire it was pretty much card game after card game, and Canyon loved it. And I played 2 more games than I usually do.

Thursday the Spanish club (Canyon, Kei and I) plus Laurie went to a presentation at the college by Professor/author Francisco Jimenez from Santa Clara University. He was such a nice guy and so inspiring. His books are about his childhood as an immigrant working in the fields, being deported, and coming back to end up going to Santa Clara University and Columbia University.

'The Circuit' is the first in a series of 3.

The Mexican food afterwards was inspiring as well. We got to take home a little of the leftover Agua Fresca.

Sat. Canyon and I took off to Yosemite for a day trip. The drive and the valley were beautiful and warm. We had lunch and just rode our bikes around the valley and about dusk packed up and headed home. I love that we can just take off and do that. We need to do it more. It was a delight.

Canyon and I, (and Canyon's friend Stephen for part) went to the annual Bridge School Benefit concert, put on by Pegi and Neil Young. This year's line up was pretty good

Norah Jones was both of our favorites, and we didn't know she would be. She did some really cool different things. My favorite was the Johnny Cash song she did. Wilco was great too. Sarah M. was our least favorite and everyone else's most.

It was perfect weather and a nice getaway. The rule for the evening was no talk of politics or insurance. And as always there was waaay too much pot smoking (not by us)

1st accident, last post (for today)

I had my first accident, not the kind that are easily cleaned up with a bath and change of pants. A much much bigger mess to clean up. I am home from work for at least another two days resting my aching body and sprained ankle--the ankle had nothing to do with the accident.

When I went to the doctor he quickly checked my aching chest, burning hand and little flesh wounds, then scolded me for not coming in sooner for my ankle which I sprained Monday while out with my running group. He then forced crutches on me, so I had to pretend to use them out the door when my ankle didn't hurt but the crutches killed my chest.

Pretty sure the Honda Element is a gonner, not my fault, and it is going to be forever and some money and some large amounts of hassle for we are back in a car of our own.

And maybe I will just walk the half-marathon in December.

More details: I was on my way back from dropping Canyon off at school, going 40-45 mph(the speed limit) A guy turned left in front of me, I didn't have time to brake or turn. A guy in a nearby office heard it and called the police. Luckily we were both okay. While waiting for Emily 3 people I knew showed up and helped. Minimally traumatic considering.

And so I am watching 'Out of Africa' with all kinds of time to blog while Laurie waits on me.

Hayley and a Harvest Band

Hayley came back with Can and I from Utah and spent her fall break on our couch. (refer to her blog for more details) It was fun for me to have her here, wish I had less working.

Canyon and Jeremy and a couple other 1st warders played for their ward Harvest something. It was nice. Canyon borrowed a bass and somehow already knows how to play it and is good at it....and wants one.

I work with children ages K-6 grades.
Children make me smile, they make me happy, they frustrate the heck out of me and they make me think. They make me think I don't want to have kids, and that there could be nothing better than having kids.

The other day a co-worker was talking to me of concerns for a certain child who is always getting in trouble in school. And then as we all do, probably too often, we went into analysis of why this child must be doing this. So in an effort to find some answer naturally I turned to my own experience.

I love the response I get when I tell people that I used to always get kicked out of class. Usually shocked. People now use such terms to describe me as 'soft-spoken', 'quiet', 'shy', and mistakenly 'laid-back'. It makes me smile, like I have fooled people, and that maybe I really am not as abnoxious and offensive as the child of yore--terrorizing teachers and not being allowed to birthday parties. (BTW the only reasons for doing this I could come up with were, because it was fun, and I made my peers laugh and my teachers mad).

Part of me feels saddened that the 'spirited' part of me only rears its head unexpectadly for thrilling moments here and there.
(Now some may argue that that part of me is still very much there). And that is okay.

As I sat in group with the kindergarteners and fought back a smile as one of them 'tooted' and they all erupted into laughter, I wondered is the fact that I am fighting a smile a bad sign because nothing inside me should think this is funny? or a bad sign because I should of just outright laughed? (which I ended up doing)

My face can be so serious sometimes. And sometimes it needs to be. But I am lucky to have lots of kids around (including Canyon) to remind me that it shouldn't be the default setting.

A lot of those behaviors of mine needed to go and many still do. We just need to work on our filtration systmes is all.

And then there is Canyon who was and is a funny kid and managed to not terrorize others. All things considered I hope our kids are like Canyon, except that they go to school.

Goodbye summer

Canyon and the elementary kids have started school. That is the cue that summer is over, though it is still hot enough. It was a good one and went so fast.

Canyon and I just got back from a 5 day adventure to Wisconsin and Chicago.
Wisconsin- Beautiful weather. Very Green. Worlds biggest Air show. Anna and Tim's house for good sleeping, talking and food. And reunion with Todd and Jessica Pitts. (See Hasty's blog for more Pics of friends and family).
Chicago- Navy Pier. American Doll Store. Tornado. Muggy.
So fun-- All of it.
